UCAS Personal Statement Advice

Make sure you follow the advice here for your personal statement to really stand out!

  • Make use of as much of the space as possible.

  • Demonstrate how much you love the subject.

    • Don't use the word 'passionate' - its very overused!

    • Talk about things that you've done:

      • Books you've read.

      • Relevant work experience.

      • Relevant hobbies and interests.

  • Talk about why you want to do the course.

    • Should also have a clear idea of what course it is that you want to study.

    • Don't tailor the personal statement to a specific university, all of the ones you apply to will see the same personal statement.

  • Give a solid introduction and conclusion.

  • If applying to Oxbridge universities, make sure to make your personal statement more academic.

  • Avoid cliches and famous quotes - admissions tutors will have seen them all before, be unique!
